Sarah Baker

Sarah Baker is a third year general psychiatry resident at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. She graduated from Rice University with a degree in history, and then she pursued an MD/MA dual-degree program at the University of Texas Medical Branch and its Institute for the Medical Humanities in Galveston, Texas. For her master’s degree, she focused on the social sciences and their application to medical education. She designed a study for her master’s thesis entitled, “Making Meaning of Empathy: A Qualitative Study of Medical Education at UTMB.” While in medical school, she also had the opportunity to be a Student Director for St. Vincent’s Clinic, one of the largest student-run free clinics in the country. It was through this work that she developed an interest in advocacy, and she has recently been elected as Chair of the Resident-Fellow Section of the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians. Her professional interests include medical education, medical humanities, forensic psychiatry, community psychiatry, and psychoanalysis.


Nadejda Bespalova

Nadejda Bespalova is a PGY2 at the NYU Psychiatry Residency Program. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Austin with a major in Neurobiology. She completed medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where she conducted research aimed to increase the identification of victims of sex trafficking in medical settings. Through this work she became interested in the impact of sexual trauma on mental health. During residency she also developed an interest in integrated care and the interface between medical and psychiatric disease. Her areas of interest in psychiatry include women’s mental health, consultation/liaison psychiatry, and medical education.


Bruce Fage

Bruce Fage is a Psychiatry resident at the University of Toronto and Chief Resident at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health, Canada’s largest mental health and addictions teaching hospital. As Vice-President of the Professional Association of Residents of Ontario, Bruce advocates for optimal training and working conditions for residents across the province. Bruce is helping to oversee the implementation of competency based medical education at the University of Toronto Department of Psychiatry, advocating for a postgraduate training program that can meet the mental health needs of the Canadian health care system. Bruce has written about emergency psychiatry and physician mental health for, and is a founding member of PsychEd, a psychiatry podcast for medical learners. Outside of medicine, Bruce enjoys playing the trombone, running, and going home to Nova Scotia. Occasionally he can be found coaching his dog Gigi through Toronto's canine fashion circuit. Christopher Flinton

Dr. Flinton is currently a third-year resident in the psychiatry residency program at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Honors Program at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. After commissioning in the United States Army, he earned his M.D. degree at the F. Edward He´bert School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He is currently a Fellow of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) for 2016-2017. He is also the winner of the 2016 Anne Alonso Ph.D. Memorial Award, awarded by the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training, for his submission: “First Experiences with Psychodynamics.” Dr. Flinton is particularly interested in provider wellness, medical education, psychodynamics, personality formations, and treating American service members and their families.


Yash Joshi

Yash Joshi is a second year Psychiatry Resident at the University of California, San Diego. He graduated from Temple University with an MD and PhD in Pharmacology in 2015 with a concurrent Master of Bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania. His graduate work explored novel molecular targets for therapy for Alzheimer's disease in preclinical animal and cell models, and was recognized with a Biology of Aging Award from the American Federation for Aging Research. His interests in bioethics are in neuroethics, research ethics and clinical mediation. In the research track at the University of California, San Diego, he is investigating the utility of EEG biomarkers in chronic psychotic illnesses. He wants to scale novel therapeutic interventions from academic centers to settings with greater clinical impact. He is committed to medical and graduate medical education, and looks forward to contributing to GAP.


Naomi Libby

Naomi Libby, MD is currently a PGY5 and Chief Resident in the Albert J. Solnit Integrated Training Program in Adult and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Research at Yale School of Medicine. After completing her undergraduate degree in Neuroscience at Brandeis University, she earned her medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine prior to returning to her native New England. Naomi’s clinical interests include psychotherapeutic and endocrinologic interventions for transgender and gender variant youth, as well as dyadic work with parents and their young children. She has a particular interest in the role of the medical professional in patient advocacy, particularly with LGBTQ youth and families. Most recently, she has been a founding member of the Yale Pediatric Gender Center, an interdisciplinary effort within the Section of Pediatric Endocrinology at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Naomi has been the recipient of several awards including the Richard L. Cohen, MD Award for Excellence in Child Psychiatry and the Jeffrey Alan Gray Memorial Prize for Compassion and Humanism from the University of Pittsburgh, and the National Institute of Mental Health Outstanding Resident Award.


Katherine Pier

Katherine was born and raised in New York City. She attended the University of Pennsylvania where she studied Psychology and received minors in English and Hispanic Studies. Between college and medical school, she lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina, taught English at an orphanage while learning Spanish and working in sales. She returned to New York in 2009 and received her medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai where she stayed for residency. During residency, she became interested in patients with complex trauma, substance use and personality disorders as well as with chronically suicidal civilians and veterans. She was able to bridge interests in teaching, research and writing as the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Psychiatry-Residents’ Journal. After graduation, she will relocate to California to pursue an Addiction Psychiatry fellowship at the University of California San Francisco.


Gopalkumar Rakesh

Gopalkumar Rakesh MD is a currently a third year resident in Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center. Between finishing medical school in India and starting residency at Duke he worked extensively with brain stimulation and imaging in psychiatry disorders at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, a premier institute for mental health treatment and research in Bangalore India. At the institute he was engaged in both clinical activities and research initially as a psychiatry resident and subsequently as an Imaging Research Fellow. At Duke he has been affiliated with the brain stimulation lab where he has continued his research with ECT and TMS. He has published in brain stimulation and has served as a Review Editor for the Frontiers Journal of Pharmacology since 2013. He is also the Associate Editor for the American Journal of Psychiatry Residents’ Journal. Some of his recent achievements are a travel award to attend the APA Research Colloquium and Biological Psychiatry conference in 2016, honorable mention commendation from the NIMH Outstanding Resident Award Program and internal funding from Duke University to spearhead research endeavors. Some of his interests are brain stimulation, psychopharmacology and using big data analytics in psychiatry. Following his residency at Duke he aims for a future in academia to continue publishing about his research and also get funded for the same.


David Saunders

David Saunders, MD, PhD, is a Clinical and Research Fellow in Adult Psychiatry/Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Child Study Center of Yale University School of Medicine. He attended Boston College as an undergraduate, majoring in theology and pre-med. He spent four months living in a Tibetan refugee community in Kathmandu, Nepal, where he studied the history and philosophy of Tibetan Buddhism. After graduating from Boston College in 2007, David returned to the same Tibetan community in Nepal as a Fulbright Scholar, studying Tibetan religio-cultural perceptions of tuberculosis. From 2008 to 2015, he obtained his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical School and a PhD in Religion at Emory University, with specific focus on Buddhist meditation theory and the philosophy of mind and self. For the last several years, he has taught mindfulness and compassion-based meditation in various settings. He is currently a PGY2, completing clinical requirements and conducting research on a novel mindfulness-based intervention for ADHD in elementary school children. He enjoys running semi-professionally in his spare time and being with his wife, son and two dogs.


Kevin Simon

Dr. Kevin M. Simon is originally from Brooklyn, NY and completed his bachelor degree in Biology/Sociology at Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD. He is currently a second year psychiatry resident within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), Atlanta, GA. Dr. Simon received his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIU-SOM) in Springfield, IL; prior to graduating from SIU-SOM, he was awarded a National Institute of Mental Health research fellowship at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic - University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where he studied implementation of innovative mental health services for children as well as health disparities in depression among the geriatric population. He has a focus on mental health services, health policy, and health equity. Kevin has published in notable academic journals including Psychiatric Services, Health Affairs, and contributed to policy briefs disseminated by The Kennedy Forum. Dr. Simon currently serves as MSM Graduate Medical Education- Resident Association President and is the resident representative of the Grady Memorial Hospital Ethics committee. Dr. Simon wants to pursue a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry after residency.


Helena Winston

Helena Winston is a second-year resident in psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine where she is interested in psychosomatic as well as forensic psychiatry. She attended medical school at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and in medical school and residency has been intimately involved in narrative medicine, both within the university campus and the community at large. Prior to attending medical school she had a career as an editor of art books at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and taught art history as an adjunct professor at Pratt Institute. She obtained her master's degree in Material Anthropology and Museum Ethnography at Oxford University and studied art history at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York and as an undergraduate at Wellesley College. She enjoys both scholarly and creative writing and any project that promotes the reduction of stigma surrounding mental illness


Emily Wu

Emily Wu is currently a PGY-2 resident at the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program. She is interested in pursuing a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship. She went to Texas A&M University for undergraduate study, and Baylor College of Medicine for medical school. During residency, she served as the Chair of the Harvard Longwood Resident Research Committee. She was elected as the American Medical Association (AMA)-Resident Fellow Section delegate by the Mass Medical Society (MMS). She is also the resident representative on the MMS Committee on Interspecialty, and serves on the leadership board of the Mass Psychiatric Society (MPS) Multicultural/Diversity Committee. During her leisure time, she enjoys hiking, biking, Zumba, and spending time with friends and family.
